How does EMS work? The simple version, and the science behind it

Your muscles already run on electricity. EMS, short for electrical muscle stimulation, sends the same kind of signal from the outside, so your muscles work while you sit still.

  1. 1

    Your brain says "squeeze"

Every move starts with a tiny electrical signal from your brain telling a muscle to tighten.

The scienceMotor neurons carry an electrical impulse, called an action potential, to the point where nerve meets muscle. That impulse triggers the muscle fibers to contract.

  2. 2

Velvoi sends a gentle signal too

Soft pads inside the shorts sit on your glutes, inner thighs and stomach and send a light pulse through your skin.

The scienceSurface electrodes deliver low-level electrical pulses that activate the motor nerves under each pad. The muscle responds just as it would to a signal from your brain.

  3. 3

The muscle squeezes, then lets go

Over and over, in rhythm, for fifteen minutes, while you sit still.

The scienceEach program alternates contraction and rest. Repeated contractions over time are what work the muscle. The FDA notes EMS devices may temporarily strengthen, tone or firm a muscle.

What it feels like

A tingle, then a firm squeeze you can feel and often see. It shouldn't hurt.

You're in control

Start at level 1 and go up only while it's comfortable. Hold + to drop to 0.

What it won't do

EMS works your muscles. It doesn't burn fat or take inches off.

What it can do

One pair. Three ways to use it.

Sculpt is the main event. Recover and Warmth are there when you want to unwind. Switch with one button.

Sculpt

Tones and firms your glutes, inner thighs and abs.

Warm-up · Activate · Tone · Train

Recover

Massage-like rhythms to unwind after a workout or long day.

Stretch · Pat · Knead · Tap

Warmth

Soothing heat on your lower stomach, with or without pulses.

Low · Medium · High

EMS may temporarily strengthen, tone or firm a muscle. It doesn't burn fat or reduce inches. Individual results vary.

Choose your zone

Glutes and thighs, abs, or everything at once.

Hold the warmth button to switch where the pulses go. Warmth is separate, so it keeps working whichever zone you pick.

Questions, answered

Which mode should I start with?

Start Sculpt at Mode 1, Warm-up, at level 1. Move up to Tone and Train as you get used to the feeling. Use the recovery modes and warmth whenever you want to unwind.

Can I use the warmth during my period?

Yes, many women like gentle warmth on those days. Start on low, and if you have severe or unusual pain, talk to your doctor.

Can I use the warmth without the pulses?

Yes. Switch the zone to Off and the warmth keeps working on its own.

Does it hurt?

It shouldn't. You'll feel tingling and a firm, rhythmic squeeze. Keep the level where it feels comfortable.

Will it help me lose weight or fat?

No. EMS works your muscles. It doesn't burn fat or reduce inches.
